Is applying for medicine, difficult?
This is one of the most difficult courses in the UK to be successful in securing a place in.
The process is long. It has many steps to it. And the failure rate is high. We strongly advise that if you are seriously considering an application to do medicine at a University in the UK, you will need to receive help and advice as early as possible and as a minimum, this should be as early as year nine.
Here are some extra tips in terms of application. Firstly, make sure that your GCSE grades, and your predicted A level grades, measure up to the minimum requirements required by the university because they will not hesitate to reject if these requirements are not met. Just before the UCAS application deadline is due, you will need to take the UCAT exam. This is an exam, designed to test various aspects of your suitability to become a doctor. At this stage, the University will know that they will already have lost a large number of applying students. Even if your UCAT score is in the correct percentile for you to have a chance at applying, then you will need to demonstrate that you will have had some live work experience. In addition, you will also need to work on your personal statement. The personal statement in its final form must be highly polished and readable. This can make all the difference between the medical school selecting you or another candidate who also has similar GCSEs A-level and UCAT scores. Finally, if you are fortunate enough to reach this stage, then there is the the interview application. The interview process will certainly be extremely rigorous, and any flaw will be mercilessly exposed, leading to a rejection. Although we paint a dismal bleak picture of the application process, it is important to be realistic so you will know what to expect, and hence, make yourself ready. This definitely isn’t something that you can do all by yourself and you will need external help areas and checkpoints. The best way to think about it is that if you can maximize your chances at these various stages then you dramatically increase the probability of receiving the offer to study medicine and become a doctor.
