55% of Medical School and Dental applications are rejected immediately.
The reason?
A LOW UCAT SCORE!
About UCAT
The University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) is a 2-hour computer-based test required for Medicine or Dentistry applicants via UCAS. It serves as a crucial filter for these competitive degree programs. These competitive degrees come with a success rate of less than 25% and even 10% at some universities.
The UCAT assesses key skills like decision-making, logical thinking, and moral ethics awareness. The test results are released immediately, compiled into deciles, and used by universities to select top candidates.
Being in the top deciles is essential for success.
You can only take the UCAT once in that year’s application cycle
Medical Schools
For Medicine there are currently forty six medical schools in the United Kingdom where students can study for a medical degree to become a qualified doctor. However, not all of these are for a graduate level entry.
- England has thirty six such schools
- Scotland has five
- Wales has three
- Northern Ireland has two
Dental Schools
For Dentistry there are sixteen dental schools in the UK. Included in this, are the two which are graduate entry.

How do I prepare for the UCAT test?
To prepare for the UCAT exam effectively, you need SMART goals and a precise plan. The official UCAT website offers a useful starting point, but due to the exam’s competitiveness, students may need additional resources. Hiring an experienced UCAT tutor can help guide you through the exam format and offer constant encouragement and mentoring throughout your preparation.
When to start practicing is crucial. Starting too early can lead to peaking too soon and a drop in performance on the actual exam day, while starting too late can result in insufficient practice and potential panic during the exam. The optimal preparation time varies depending on the individual student.
Revision should be regular and consistent, and if you are struggling with a particular section or not improving, it’s crucial to reassess your strategies rather than repeating the same ineffective ones. A personal tutor can be beneficial in addressing these issues and improving your overall performance and timing on the UCAT exam.

This is particularly beneficial given the increasingly competitive nature of gaining admission into Medicine or Dentistry, as reported by The Guardian in 2022 – conditions that largely still apply today.
